Overcoming Decision Fatigue in Design
From the very beginning, we knew we wanted to be involved in every aspect of the design process. This was not just a house; it was a labor of love, a canvas on which we would paint our story. Join me as I take you through the decisions we made, the challenges we faced, and the joy of seeing our vision coming to life.
Living by the coast, we knew we wanted our home to blend harmoniously with the breathtaking natural surroundings. We took on the task of selecting every exterior fixture and element ourselves with the help and guidance of our designers. From the classic cedar shingles on the roof to the elegant brick accents, each choice was carefully made to evoke a sense of coastal charm and timeless beauty. We wanted the exterior to welcome us home and greet visitors with warmth and character.
Lighting played a crucial role in our home, as it can dramatically influence the atmosphere and mood. We spent countless hours researching and hand-picking the perfect lighting fixtures to illuminate our living spaces. With unwavering certainty, one aspect I was sure about from the very beginning was my desire to grace our home's exterior with gas lanterns. To me, their enchanting charm is unparalleled, and no classic bulb lighting could ever replicate the warm and inviting ambiance they bring. In addition, we opted for large windows to allow ample natural light, making our home feel airy and connected to the surrounding environment.
As lovers of the shore, we sought to mirror the hues of the sea and sky within our interiors. Choosing the right paint colors became an adventure, as we wholeheartedly embraced our designer's expertise in this crucial element. The soft blues and gray-greens brought a sense of tranquility, while sandy tones evoked the essence of the beach. The colors became the foundation of our coastal oasis, reflecting our connection to the natural world.
Every detail inside our home was meticulously considered. We wanted a perfect balance of functionality and style. From faucets to doorknobs, we made sure each fitting complemented the beachside theme while offering practicality. The bathroom fixtures exuded elegance and the kitchen appliances were chosen for both performance and aesthetics.
Selecting the flooring and cabinet styles was another journey in itself. I had a clear vision for the main floors, desiring real hardwoods in a light shade that would emanate warmth throughout our home. For the bathrooms, we settled on tiles, offering both practicality and elegance. We hope for the result to be beautiful and comfortable flooring, perfect for barefoot walks after a day at the beach. As for the cabinets, we opted for a mix of classic and modern styles, creating a seamless blend of functionality and charm.
While the decisions seemed overwhelming at times, we cherished each moment of the process. From initial concepts and mood boards to the final touches, our home-building journey became a symbol of our love, unity, and shared vision. We may have encountered a few bumps along the way, but each challenge was an opportunity to grow and refine our choices.
