Embarking on the journey of building a custom home is an exciting endeavor that brings to life the vision of your perfect living space. Our adventure began in 2021 when we delved into the design process, and now, in August 2023, as we admire the progress of drywall installation and exterior transformation, we reflect upon the remarkable timeline that has brought us to this stage. From the initial design concepts to the meticulous selection of every detail, our home's evolution has been a labor of love and dedication.

Designing the Blueprint

Our adventure began with a dream and a blank canvas in June of 2021. The design process, a cornerstone of our custom home, was set into motion. With the invaluable guidance of our builders, we were equipped with a comprehensive checklist that became our compass. Delving into brainstorming sessions and thoughtful deliberations, we sketched the blueprint of our dreams – determining the layout, stories, outdoor living, and the rooms that would become the heart of our everyday lives. Every aspiration and necessity was meticulously considered, each element serving as a guiding star for the builders who would ultimately weave our ideas into the fabric of reality. However, as with any artistic endeavor, our visions weren't always perfectly aligned. While I leaned towards a more modest square footage that felt cozy and intimate, my husband's perspective was drawn to a larger space that offered ample room for various activities. Our differing opinions sparked spirited discussions, infusing our project with the richness of diverse perspectives. In all honesty, my husband emerged victorious in this round, but you can’t win them all.

Organizing Ideas

Simultaneously, I embarked on my own creative journey. Armed with a Pinterest account and endless enthusiasm, I curated boards for each room, from the cozy living spaces to the serene bedrooms. I pinned ideas for exterior aesthetics and even created a board dedicated to the often-overlooked yet crucial details like light switches. Pinterest became a virtual mood board, allowing me to explore an array of possibilities and refine our vision. As the project unfolded, I discovered that the realm of interior design had extended its borders into the digital world. Platforms like Instagram became my gateways to a plethora of designers and creators whose work resonated with my aesthetic aspirations. Among them, Eyeswoon stood out like a beacon, capturing my attention with her innovative and captivating design concepts. If you find yourself in need of inspiration, turning to resources like Pinterest, Instagram, or simply taking leisurely drives around your local area to observe the architecture can be incredibly beneficial.

Selecting the Pieces

The tactile aspect of building a home became evident when we stepped into local tile stores, touched hardwood samples, and envisioned how each element would complement our chosen design. It was a sensory experience that brought us closer to the heart of our project. Hours of research led us to brands and materials that resonated with our aesthetic preferences, and each selection felt like another step toward realizing our dream. The aspect that proved to be the most challenging for me was selecting the perfect countertops. With a visit to stone yards, I delved into the world of possibilities. However, this task was fraught with difficulty due to the unique circumstances that left me feeling overwhelmed. The stones at our local yard braved the elements, exposed to rain and sun. Rain showers left them temporarily discolored, and the intense lighting conditions sometimes played tricks on my perception, making it a complex puzzle to anticipate how they'd look within our own space. Ultimately, the choice of quartzite in a honed finish resonated deeply with my vision. Within this realm, I discovered a sense of tranquility through two exceptional and understated options: the timeless Taj Mahal and the refined Bianco Superior.

Adjusting and Adapting

As our home has progressed, we've encountered the realities of a dynamic construction process. Some elements we initially chose were out of stock, prompting us to adapt and explore alternative options. While this introduced challenges, it also offered us opportunities to refine our selections, resulting in a home that genuinely mirrors our evolving tastes. Furthermore, the initial completion date of October 2023 has undergone revision. It's a common occurrence in the world of construction, where circumstances can shift. Consequently, we won't be moving into our new home until the upcoming year. In response to queries about the anticipated completion date, my estimation holds no more certainty than yours. Truthfully, we find ourselves embracing this journey with open hearts, along for ride.

Our timeline of building a custom home showcases not only the stages of construction but the passion, dedication, and creativity invested in every step. From the initial design discussions to the meticulous selection of materials, this journey has been a blend of collaboration and personal expression. As we eagerly await the next chapters of this story – the final touches, the décor, and the moment we step through the threshold – we remain grateful for the opportunity to shape a living space that embodies our dreams.
